Mids Compete in Carolina Invitational

RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Navy women's crew team saw its varsity boat
place second in a pair of races at the Carolina Invitational, held
Saturday on Lake Wheeler in Raleigh, N.C.
The varsity entry placed second to Cincinnati by just under three
seconds in its morning race, then was defeated by the host Tar Heels
by two seconds during the afternoon session. The Mids picked up wins
over North Carolina (eight seconds) and Delaware (36 seconds) during
the morning session, with wins in the afternoon race coming over
Eastern Michigan (four seconds) and St. Joseph's (seven seconds).
Navy's second varsity boat ran its record to 11-1 on the season by
winning a pair of races by eight seconds and 1.7 seconds,
respectively. The Navy novice entry matched the two victories of the
second varsity boat, winning its pair of races by a combined 26
seconds. The wins improved the boat's record to an unblemished 16-0
this spring.
"All in all it was a great day of racing against some very talented
teams," said Navy head coach Mike Hughes. "I'm happy with the
performance of our second varsity and freshman boats, but we need
our first varsity boat to carry over some of the speed it produces
in practice into our races. They are winning races and have a decent
record (12-5), but they have shown the ability to go faster and will
need to do so as we progress through the season."
Navy will next take to the water for competition April 24 when the
Mids take part in the inaugural Patriot League Championship in
Worcester, Mass.
